POTD: The NGSW – Rifle, XM7, and The NGSW – Automatic Rifle, XM250
Photo Of The Day and we take a look at some of the most modern hand-held firearms and gear available today. The location is Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), which is a major United States Army installation located in Harford County, Maryland, near the town of Aberdeen. Established in 1917, it serves as one of the Army's oldest active proving grounds, with a primary mission focused on the research, development, testing, and evaluation of weapons, equipment, and technology.
Here’s what PEO Soldier wrote:
“During his most recent visit to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael R. Weimer was able to get a hands-on demonstration of PEO Soldier’s portfolio. This included the Modular Scalable Vest (MSV), the Integrated Head Protection System (IHPS), and the Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW), along with an array of other weapons. The NGSW – Rifle, XM7, and the NGSW – Automatic Rifle, XM250, are part of a larger effort from across PEO Soldier to modernize the Army and equip Soldiers with the best tools possible to properly execute their missions.
Sgt. Maj. Of the Army Weimer stands at the forefront of this Force Modernization as he leads the Army into the future and maintains a lethal fighting force as the world and technologies continue to advance”

i used to think the M7 is like M14 all over again- heavy full powered rifle that was designed for scenarios contrary to reality. Then I saw InrangeTV and MAC's review, and I changed my mind.
Sorry M14, perhaps I treated you too harshly. At least the M14 in a plastic stock can do way better than 4moa with M80.
The round definitely appears to have some very good terminal effects. The issue is in the US military context of employment with the rifle is that from the US guys I have worked with is the levels of marksmanship of your average Soldier or Marine. By their own admission it isn't as great and a new faster round with more recoil won't change this much because a miss is a miss regardless of the round or rifle.
The US fix to this is the Vortex 1-8X sight with its 'ruggedized' Fire Control Unit, where they look to use the smarts of the sight (laser range finder and ballistic program) to provide the capability and to a degree mitigate gaps in training. On the surface it does that with being able to range a target, calculate ballistic solutions and provide a new point of aim etc on top of some other very cool features. On a good day this would also help mitigate some of the training gaps and allow the average Soldier or Marine to shoot to the required capability of the system.
The big counter to this systems is Emission Control (EMCON). The Russians have already began to deploy laser warning systems at the individual level (primarily SOF type) in Ukraine that give immediate direction, range and type of laser feedback to the wearer much like systems on AFV's. The Chinese are known to have them now and they are becoming more cheaper to produce and wide spread.
The issue now is the smarts of the system could possibly be rendered 'dumb' in a near peer environment and fall back on the training of the shooter.
