Mississippi Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday

This weekend, the state of Mississippi lives up to its motto, “Virtute et Armis,” Latin for “By Valor and Arms” by declaring no tax on sales through Sunday on all purchases of firearms, ammunition, and some hunting supplies. Celebrating Labor Day weekend while encouraging law-abiding Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights while saving money in the process, puts a smile on my face and makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, even if I don’t live in Mississippi.

The Mississippi Department of Revenue describes “hunting supplies” as “archery equipment, firearm and archery cases, firearm and archery accessories, hearing protection, holsters, belts, and slings.” While general hunting supplies are not exempt, including animals used for hunting (nice try), House Bill 1404 establishing the Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday, passed by the Mississippi Legislature in 2014, is great news for hunting and firearms enthusiasts alike. The Bill was introduced by Rep. Jeff Smith during a wave of pro-gun legislation across the U.S. at that time.

Unfortunately, layaway sales are not included, so you better come prepared to take your Labor Day gift home with you. You will, however, be able to take advantage of the Sales Tax Holiday via mail-order, phone, and internet purchases as long as you make your purchase between now and Sunday.

The primary aim of the Mississippi Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is to support and encourage gun ownership in the state, which aligns with the cultural and political values of many law-abiding Mississippians who respect and practice their fundamental rights. The holiday also contributes on an economic level, stimulating sales for local firearms and outdoor sporting goods businesses.

The Mississippi Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday takes place annually, typically over a weekend in late August in order to coincide with the beginning of hunting season preparations.

There you have it, friends. Enjoy a bit of Second Amendment joyfulness going into your weekend! You can find out more about the tax holiday in this official guide.
