In my trips to the range, I have only dabbled in shooting steel. Everyone’s gateway metal target is rimfire spinners or resetting targets and those are really enjoyable. Can shooting a big AR500 silhouette really be any better? I’ll let you know below in my review of the Caldwell 66% IPSC Silhouette Target. Let’s dive right in!

Long range shooting is one of those intersections of science, skill, and art. It’s hard enough on a flat range, but when done in high winds and from different positions, the difficulty level ramps up. A lot of the skills used in long range shooting can be honed with decent gear and enough practice, but there is nothing like a solid foundation to build upon. That is where training like that offered by RangeTech comes in. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience a one on one long range training course with Mike from RangeTech. I picked up some great skills and techniques and learned how to best utilize my gear on another level.

TFB’s Photo Of The Day and Special Forces in almost any kind of exercise is something that go very well together. Today we have some really cool pictures from the Danube river. Here we’re taking part in an operation where Hungarian Special Operations Forces and Naval Special Warfare operators conduct infiltration and exfiltration training with Special Operations Craft-Riverine (SOC-R) in the Danube River during Black Swan earlier this year.

At TFB we’re devoted to finding the best and most interesting firearms-related photos together with a short story. You’ll find them here every day in our Photo Of The Day article series. Today we have Paratroopers from the 1st Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment (Airborne). Above you can see them unleashing their weapon systems at various targets downrange at a combined arms live fire lane in the Grafenwoehr Training Area. This happened last year in July.

With the ongoing and continually increasing proliferation of sound suppressor usage in many areas of the firearms industry, new manufacturers with new innovations have been frequently cropping up for quite some time now. One company that has gained some notoriety in recent years is OSS Suppressors. This Utah-based operation’s principal claim to fame comes in the form of their patented “Flow-Through” silencer design. Cans with this unique engineering system are advertised as having the ability to eliminate gas blowback by redirecting the gases forward, through a helical system of internal chambers and out of a series of edge-positioned ports at the front of the silencer. Now this noted silencer maker has announced a new partnership with another noteworthy entity from a different segment of the firearms industry, Centrifuge Training.

Our Photo Of The Day features a rifle you don’t see every day – the LMT MARS-L made by Lewis Machine and Tool Company in the hands of reservists from New Zealand, as they conduct a fighting patrol through the Malaysian jungle. Replacing the Steyr AUG, the LMT in 5.56x45mm NATO now serves as the standard service rifle of the New Zealand Army. It’s available in two different barrel lengths.

Photo Of The Day and we have more great pictures of the Swedish Home Guard and U.S. Army Green Berets as they trained together in November last year. The Swedish Heckler & Koch G3 clone called Ak4 is easy to spot, with the Aimpoint CS red dot sights and upgrades from Spuhr. Did you also notice the PSG90 B Sniper Rifle on his back, the AI AW? If not, look again.

Matthew Dillon, a machine gunner with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, holding security with an M240B machine gun. The event is a tactics exercise for Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) in 2019. The Marines, a part of Charlie Company, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, maneuvered and assaulted an objective as a company for the exercise.

The World moves faster and faster, and the number of images produced with it. But rest assured that TFB’s Photo Of The Day will keep its focus on firearms. And man’s best friend of course. Above you can see Norwegian Tyri from the K9 unit in the Quick Reaction Force Claymore in HV-16 (Norwegian Defense). They are parts of an exercise defending the local harbor. Surely you have already noted that the K9 handler carries the Heckler & Koch MP7 (Maschinenpistole 7).

A new series on YouTube is out by the people over at Angstadt Arms called “At The Ready.” The new series gives viewers a close look into the daily routines of some of the most successful names in the firearms industry as well as an exploration of what drives them to succeed. The first episode premiered on June 15th and featured Ian Strimbeck of Runenation with other firearms industry personalities to follow in the months to come. The first episode is available on YouTube and has been posted below.

Do you have a hard time finding a safe and secure place to shoot? Some own a ranch and build their own, some visit the shooting range and some join the U.S. Navy where the sea eventually serves as your backstop. In our  Photo Of The Day, we have U.S. Coast Guards from the Law Enforcement Detachment 104 conducting firearms training on the deck of the USS Charleston (LCS-18), a modern littoral combat ship. Judging from the photos, the unit looks well equipped.

Suppressive fire is the topic of the day in our Photo Of The Day. Above we can see a U.S. Marine with the 1st Marine Division as he’s providing just that. The event was called Marine Air Ground Task Force Warfighting Exercise 3-21 and took place on the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California, in May of this year.

Photo Of The Day – Today we’re sharing some wonderful images from the NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre. We’ve seen some other selected images from this event before, and it’s an event that just keeps on giving like a summer holiday on Crete.

Thermal weapon sights aren’t anything new but training with them is a hard thing to accomplish sometimes. When I was invited out to shoot with some of SIG Sauer Electro Optics’ thermal sights, they had to heat up our steel targets using a battery-powered heater in order for us to see the targets. IR.TOOLS, which specializes in thermal and IR targets and patches has both passive and powered thermal shooting targets for use with thermal weapon sights in many different environments.

Somehow I think there are fewer fans of the Beretta ARX 200 out there, but what’s not to like about the rifle? Many years ago TFB covered the Beretta ARX 200 7.62mm Designated Marksmen Rifle, and you can find more details about it at this link. The sight looks like a Steiner ICS.

The United States Concealed Carry Association, or USCCA, is an organization focused on providing resources and benefits to responsibly armed Americans. They offer a variety of informational initiatives from training and education, legal guidance, digital tutorials and checklists, and more. They also offer self-defense liability insurance coverage for their members. Now the Association has announced a new partner, one of the firearms industry’s top gun manufacturers: SIG SAUER.

Here we can see the Battalion Zapadores of the Brigade ‘Guadarrama’ XII as they carry out an exercise to cross water obstacles in various ways . They are using the Heckler & Koch G36E. E is short for Export. The rifle has a telescopic sight with a 1.5x magnification. The reticle fixed at 300 meters.

There are more new gun owners than ever running around these days and while many of them are being trained by their friends and family, there are probably still many people out there who are in serious need of basic firearms instruction as well as navigating their own path through firearms ownership. Smith & Wesson released their GUNSMARTS Series a little less than a year ago and the show is hosted by my good friend Ken Scott. Smith & Wesson and crew are back with GUNSMARTS Series 2 which includes slightly more complex subject matter like how to join a gun range, firearms familiarization, gunshop etiquette and even dispelling some myths of gun ownership.

Photo Of The Day: We don’t see the Beretta ARX160 too often, but here it is in the hands of Italian soldiers with the enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia at Camp Adazi, Latvia. They are conducting FIBUA training (Fighting in Built-Up Area). The ARX160 was developed for the Italian Armed Forces and launched in 2008 as part of the Soldato Futuro program. It uses the 5.56x45mm round.

In this Photo Of The Day, we visit the Guard Jaeger Regiment from Finland and take a look at their weapons and gear. It’s not too often we get a closer look at these, so here’s an excellent opportunity. 

Photo Of The Day: Today we have some really cool sniper rifles and gear operated by some of the World’s best sniper teams. Well, at least one of the teams was able to present themselves as the best in the United States. Did you ever shoot from a tilted and moving platform like the sniper above and below? Did you ever shoot with another person on the same platform?

Another Photo Of The Day with an FN Herstal FN SCAR with all the perks. Here it is in the hands of some Belgian Forces, at the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania, 2021. The Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) is NATO’s forward deployed defense in Central Europe through Poland and Northern Europe through the Baltic states, and they seem to be very busy with their training.

This past weekend, I drove down to see my father and spent some time with him. He recently moved from Tampa Florida to Missouri and needed to take a new concealed carry course to apply for his Missouri permit. I decided to tag along and see what some of the students were shooting and how the average shooter does in a training course. Honestly, I was surprised by the lack of training most had and started talking to some of the students. During my time at the course, I noticed three trends throughout the students and often times it matches what happens in the real world. Let’s dive into some of the most common issues with concealed carriers.

Each day a different image from the World of firearms. We call this POTD, short for Photo Of The Day, and is our daily article where we go to great length trying to find the most interesting pictures for you out there. Today we’re looking at Canadian Land Forces soldiers of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, 2nd Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, as they’re setting up security in the early morning hours. The unit was on a joint force exercise with 3rd Battalion, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, to clear the area of enemy in the mountainous wooded border region near Lielvarde, Latvia.

There’s a lot of action going on in today’s Photo Of The Day. We have a bunch of  U.S. Marines with the 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, using a variety of weapons systems in order to seize an enemy position. This happened during a live-fire combat rehearsal called Fuji Viper 21.3 at the Combined Arms Training Center, Camp Fuji, Japan, in mid-April 2021.

Nosler Inc continue their efforts of helping the millions of first-time firearm owners. Back in February, we reported about Nosler’s Project 48, an initiative to recruit industry experts to produce content related to firearms safety, handling, maintenance, legal aspects, etc. The company’s latest contribution to educating the new gun owners is in a form of a video where professional hunter and Nosler Pro-Staff member Randy Newberg tells useful tips for those who plan their first trip to the shooting range. In the video, Randy talks about types of ranges, the rules they may have, firearms safety, range officer commands, the equipment you’ll need to bring with you to the shooting range and general range etiquette. Precision Rifle Series (PRS) can best be described as a mixture between long-range and precision rifle shooting and practical shooting. TFB recently reported about the plans for a Precision Rifle World Championships in 2022, and hopefully, it will happen.

Over the last year, we have seen a bit of a hard road for gun owners in the United States. Ammo prices have soared from what they were even 18 months ago and ranges aren’t near as full anymore. It’s been a real struggle for people to get out and shoot on a regular basis, which is exactly why I decided to hop in my truck and head to Cleveland to take the Fieldcraft Survivals Carbine course a couple of weekends ago. This was the first carbine course I have taken from them and they have a deeper approach to training than other companies.
