Restoring and Making an SBS From a Remington 870 Shotgun

Last fall, I wrote about my experience with the ATF Form 1 process to make a Short Barreled Shotgun (SBS). Between buying my 1980’s vintage Remington 870 Magnum, getting the ATF approval, and actually making it into an SBS has been a long time, admittedly though, purely self induced. My goal has been to do as much of the work myself, rather than to send it off and have the work done for me. That way, I save some money, and learn things in the process.

TFB Review: Shockwave Tech's Raptor F1 Shotgun Furniture For 870's, 500 & 590's

Shockwave Technologies have introduced their Raptor F1 shotgun furniture kits for the Mossberg 500/590 and Remington 870 shotgun models. These furniture sets include the forend and heat shield, and a bird’s head pistol grip. Shockwave Tech was nice enough to send a sample of each to review. Bird’s head shotgun grips have become wildly popular of late since the release of the Mossberg Shockwave, and Remington Tac-14 and Tac-13 shotguns. Shockwave Tech’s shotgun forearm furniture is a new, modular take on the forend with a twist. The optional top cover to the Shockwave Technologies forearm attaches to the slide action and acts as a heat shield, and also incorporates a front and rear sight.

Savage Announces New Thumbhole 320 Shotguns

Although Savage‘s rifles are what most firearms enthusiasts know them best for, their shotgun offerings are highly regarded by many hunters and clay shooters as well. These scatterguns are divvied up under three labels: the Savage-named line, the Fox line, and the most prolific of the series is Stevens. Under the Savage shotgun heading, four models of Renegauge semi-autos are available, intended chiefly for waterfowl, turkey, and other bird hunters. The Fox label currently only carries one model, the A Grade, which is a break-open side-by-side design in either 12 gauge or 20 gauge. The Stevens series holds the bulk of the brand’s options, with 27 different models built for a variety of purposes. From hunting to competing to home defense, virtually every shotgun niche is addressed. Now Savage has announced the addition of thumbhole-stock flavors to the Stevens 320 series. The press release detailing this release reads as follows.

TFB Review: Ithaca Model 37 Defense

The Ithaca Model 37 started life in 1937 in Ithaca, NY.  The design is derived from the JMB designed Remington model 17.  Chambered in 12 and later 20 ga, the 37 had a few interesting facets of its design that made it somewhat unique.  One was the slab sided, bottom ejecting receiver.  The other was the ability to slam-fire when the slide action was cycled with the trigger held back.  This was not by accident, but an ability afforded by via a second sear that would release the hammer when the bolt had gone fully into battery (sadly discontinued in the mid-1970’s).  Ithaca 37s were used by the United States military in WWII and in Vietnam by both US and ARVN forces. Interestingly enough, Trench Gun models of the Ithaca 37 marked with the ordnance bomb issued during WWII can be worth over $10,000!

POTD: The Beretta M3P Pump and Semi-Auto Shotgun

The Italian company Beretta opens its vaults to show the M3P shotgun. These photos were taken in 1990. The M3P is a 12 gauge shotgun with 5 rounds fed from a detachable box magazine although some sources say the magazine takes 6 rounds. It can run both as a pump-action or semi-automatic, which is great if you want to use special loads that are too weak (rubber balls, for instance) for cycling the semi-auto action. The design of the folding stock is special in the sense that it folds over the top of the barrel and becomes a carrying handle. The operation is similar to the SPAS-15.

870 Overhaul – Is It Worth Rebuilding A Remington 870?

A few months back, I wrote an article on finding a Remington 870 police trade-in shotgun for right around $50. What I didn’t tell you was that I went back and bought a second 870 for the same price once the article was released. Both shotguns had some degree of surface rust and had seen better days. The bolts and components were all worn down and the overall lockup left a lot to be desired. So after taking a look at everything, I decided to sink a little money into them and try to bring one of the tired 870’s back to life. Let’s jump into my journey rebuilding a Remington 870.

Pawn Shop Finds – The Poor Man's KSG… An 870 Bullpup

One of my favorite things about writing for TFB is being able to write about the crazy things I find in the wild. Last week I was running around the various shops in western Michigan and came across this bullpup 870 conversion. The guy behind the counter was an extremely grumpy old-timer who went on about MUH 1911 and how polymer guns are Chinese junk. I could write an entire article on the employee but the shotgun was something I was rather interested in checking out.

Reader's Choice BEST Pump-Action Shotgun: Remington 870

For some of us, that open-ended statement might need to fill the need of hunting, home defense, competitive shooting, recreation or oddly enough all of the above! This month’s voting was as much of what do you believe is the BEST Pump-Action Shotgun, but it also begged the question of what do you use shotguns for? Between 10 fairly different options to vote on your chosen winner was… (drum roll please)… the Remington 870 Express Field/Home Combo 12 Gauge!!!

SILENCER SATURDAY #97: Shotgun Suppressors – Worth It?

Good morning everyone and thanks for joining us for the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – manufacturers of the new Resonator R2 with adaptable interface (additional information below). Last week we took you through the basics on how to buy a silencer; an important topic but admittedly a real snooze-fest. One commenter requested some extra hot baffle action for this week, literally pushing a suppressor beyond manufacturer recommendations. While I’m not ready to torch a perfectly good can, the point was taken – let’s spice it up this week with a look at shotgun suppressors.
