One of the country’s leading digital night vision device manufactures has landed a pretty big contract with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. SIONYX recently acquired a 5-year long contract to provide FBI agents with the pocket-sized Aurora PRO digital night vision camcorder to allow their agents to capture full-color daylight images in low light conditions. The SIONYX Aurora PRO operates using an extremely light-sensitive sensor in stark contrast to true night vision devices which use image intensifier tubes.

The electromagnetic (EM) spectrum ranges from gamma rays to long radio waves. In this wide spectrum resides the visible band of violet to red light. All the EM spectrum travels at the speed of light: 300,000,000 meters/second (186,411 miles/second). A good rule of thumb is that light travels about one foot in one nanosecond or a billionth of a second.  This spectrum is divided into different wavebands: gamma rays, x-rays, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, short radio, and long radio wavelengths, arranged from the most energetic to the least. The higher the energy band, the higher the frequency or cycles per second and the shorter the physical distance between peaks of this cycle. We refer to a single cycle, of any of the EM spectrum, to be its wavelength. In the visible band, wavelength is the same as color.

In the world of night vision, almost everything is expensive. #becausenightvision is a common explanation why accessories are exorbitantly expensive. However, it is possible to have a cheap night vision upgrade. Some of them are affordable hacks and others are DIY solutions. Such examples are the LLI white phosphor filters and the DIY adjustable iris cap.

I know my lane – if you are looking for a 300BLK or rimfire suppressor, I can probably point you in the right direction. But, if you want to see in the dark, I’ll hand you off to someone like Nick C. who, if he can put down his LEGO Millennium Falcon long enough, has enough night vision expertise to outfit a platoon. So, when it came time to talk with our friend Steve Lemenov from ATN Corp, I asked some pretty basic questions about thermal imagery and traditional night vision. When shooting or observing with night vision at longer distances, you might need to add some supplementary illumination. Carbines set up for night vision usually have a multi-function aiming laser (MFAL). In a previous Friday Night Lights, I went over the most popular full power MFALs. While these can work for long-range shooting with a clip-on, they are expensive and for the most part, you are using a scope to aim so you don’t need an infrared pointer. There are two standalone IR illuminators, the Luna Optics LN-ELIR-3 and the Steiner SPIR. We will take a look at both.

This time we are looking at a newcomer to the night vision scene, Nocturn Industries. They are coming out with a 3D printed dual tube night vision binocular called the UANVB Katana.

Last week was the realization of a dream. This was all thanks to Last Shadow, a Temple, Texas based aviation company that primarily focuses on helicopter hog hunts. However, they are a full service company and entertained my desire to shoot a gun from a helicopter at night using night vision. It was one of the most fun experiences I have ever had with night vision.

Back in the summer of 2019, I reviewed the ATN Corp ThOR4 thermal scope. I tested and evaluated the ThOR4 from behind a bench, not so much as a hunter. Well, an opportunity arose to further test the ThOR4 but in a more practical scenario, such as hog hunting. I will admit I was not overly impressed with the ThOR4 the first time I reviewed it. However, Adam S. and I went on an ATN ThOR4 hog hunt down in South Texas at Mellon Creek Outfitters and the experience changed my mind about the ThOR4.
