[SHOT 2018] Archangel QBD Stock For NON-Takedown Ruger 10/22
The Ruger 10/22 Takedown is one of the best features Ruger has done to the Ruger 10/22. And after Magpul released their backpacker stock it added more features to the 10/22 Takedown and made it more of a backpack gun. Well wouldn’t it be nice if you could turn your regular 10/22 and turn it into a backpack gun?
[SHOT 2018] Federal's .224 Valkyrie Hits the Ground Running – 4 Years in the Making
What did we see at Range Day? Valkyries, Valkyries everywhere. Federal’s pint-sized long distance runner has already outstripped the market purchase of its direct competitors in the high performance AR-15 market, testified to by the sheer number of .224 Valkyrie rifles peppered across the booths and stalls of Range Day ’18.

[SHOT 2018] What do YOU want to see from SHOT 2018?
The 2018 Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoors Show is upon us! Over the next week, the TFB Team consisting of over 16 writers, and 4 videographers will be working our hardest (and fastest) to try and bring to you, our readership, some of the broadest coverage of SHOT Show 2018 that we hope we can provide the internet. We’ll be shooting new firearms at lanes on Media Day at the Range, climbing all over booths on the show floor, and quizzing sales representatives left and right about the latest and greatest for 2018. Days will be long, shoes will get worn through, gratuitous amounts of photos and videos will be taken.
TFBTV's Top 5 Guns of 2017
In this episode of TFBTV, James discusses the top 5 guns that 2017 brought us. 2017 was a generally flat year for new product introductions. SHOT Show darlings, the Hudson H9 and the KelTec RDB Survival Rifle, didn’t get to shelves this year, and there wasn’t much in the way of innovation, perhaps due to the deflated gun market. That said, this list contains a couple of reboots from respected manufacturers, a big manufacturer offering their spin on a classic in an effort to break into a crowded market, a couple of sneaky sneaky shotguns, and a popular Swiss manufacturer’s attempt at breaking in to the subgun market. Watch for the full breakdown.
Army Chief of Staff Milley Says Next Rifle Will Have Much More Range, Be More Accurate Than M4 Carbine
At an AUSA breakfast conference yesterday, US Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley gave us a hint at exactly what the US Army’s next rifle could look like, and the focus was on extended range capability. The rifle, Milley said, will give a 10x improvement in capability through the type of ammunition, optics, and degree of chamber pressure specific to it, with the aim of providing the soldier a weapon with much more accuracy and range than the current M4 Carbine. Milley also clarified that the term “10x” was not intended to be a precise measurement of the capability growth, but rather a term indicating significant improvement. The new rifle will come as part of an effort that also includes new artillery, tanks, aircraft, and virtual reality training facilities, Milley said.
CTTSO Releases Solicitation for .264 USA Rifles, Carbines, PDWs
The Army Marksmanship Unit’s .264 USA – a medium-sized 6.5mm round in-between the 6.5mm Grendel and 6.5mm Creedmoor in size – is not yet dead, it seems. The round, about which little had been heard in official channels for a couple of years, is the subject-in-part of a new solicitation released by the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office’s Technical Support Working Group (CTTSO TSWG). The Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) describes a need for a Lightweight Intermediate Caliber Cartridge (LICC) and an “Individual Weapon System (IWS), designed to “overmatch” targets out to 800 meters. The specifications for the new weapon are quire ambitious, with a threshold velocity requirement of 2,650 ft/s with a 108gr bullet, and an objective requirement of 2,750 ft/s with the same, both from an 11.5″ barrel!
How Good Is Your Eye Protection? What Are They Made Of?
Bret Hunter is the founder and owner of TacticalRX. I met Bret at Big 3 East a few years ago and although I have 20/20 vision I am amazed by his glasses. Many shooters who use prescription lenses typically use their normal glasses as eye protection or they might get some form of prescription sports eyewear. This usually means an insert or flat lenses. Bret’s shooting glasses are curved and the prescription is 100% throughout the lens. Tim Yan did a review on them back in 2014.
Unique Grips – Self Adjusting AR15 Grip
You may recognize the company Unique ARs. They make custom handguards. Well, Unique ARs has come out with an interesting self-adjusting AR pistol grip. It changes its shape to fit your hand. You can reset it and change the shape for another shooter within seconds.
BIG Freakin' Cartridge Test 012: RUAG SS109 (M855 Equivalent) 5.56mm NATO, 16 and 20 Barrels
Next up for the Big Freakin’ Cartridge Test is RUAG Ammotec’s version of the NATO-standard SS109 round (equivalent to US M855). I believe the ammunition I tested may have been made in RUAG’s facility in Thun, Switzerland, although I have not confirmed that.

Dead Foot Arms G-REX Telescoping Brace
The folks over at Dead Foot Arms just announced they have a telescoping brace in the works for use with bufferless pistols. Dead Foot Arms are the guys who make the MCS (Modified Cycle System), a short operating system and folder for the AR-15. Dead Foot Arms posted on their Instagram page a sneak peak of their new G-REX Telescoping Brace.
BIG Freakin' Cartridge Test 010: Mk. 318 Mod. 0 62gr SOST (T556TNB1), 16 and 20 Barrels
Next up for the Big Freakin’ Cartridge Test is Federal’s T556TNB1 load, which is the civilian market name for the Mk.318 SOST projectile developed by US SOCOM as a “barrier blind” round for the M4 Carbine and Mk. 18 CQB upper receiver. This ammunition uses a reverse drawn jacket to improve accuracy, and couples a fragmenting front end with a solid gilding metal base that improves penetration through tough barriers. I love this ammunition and use it religiously for home defense. Continuing on from the last installment, we are now looking at the velocity test results for the 20″ barrel (more on the 16″ later).
REVIEW: CZ Shadow 2-A Great Competition Pistol Right Out of the Box?
What may make a pistol great for home defense, LE/Military use, or concealed carry may not translate well to a pure competition pistol, and vice versa. Competition pistols can run into the multiple thousands of dollars. For those starting out in the sport, such cost can be daunting. Sure, a stock Glock 17 or CZ75 can get one pretty far into these sports before the need or (let’s be honest here) desire for the “next level” of equipment comes to pass. If one has the inclination to look for a pistol designed specifically for competition shooting in the USPSA or IPSC style of competitions, a certain set of features is desirable. If this author were looking for one, these are some traits he would look for:

BIG Freakin' Cartridge Test 008: PMC M855 5.56x45mm 62gr LAP, 16 and 20 Barrels
Next up for the Big Freakin’ Cartridge Test is Korean manufacturer PMC’s clone of M855, called X-TAC M855 LAP. This ammunition features very uniform-looking external dimensions, attractively finished brass cases and projectile jackets, and a reasonable price. I formerly used M855 as a stockpiling round, although I have since switched to other rounds like Federal’s T556TNB1.
Review: DFNDR Armor- We Shoot Up Their Body Armor & Backpack Armor
Last October I came across DFNDR Armor at the Big 3 East Media Event. Thanks to Phil White, we got them to send us a rifle rated SAPI plate and a handgun rated plate for backpacks.

Another Victory for the POF Revolution: 2018 Golden Bullseye Award for Rifle of the Year
The POF USA Revolution compact .308 rifle continues to rack up awards, as it has been awarded the NRA American Rifleman Magazine’s 2018 Golden Bullseye award for Rifle of the Year. Just this past August , industry peers and professionals awarded the Revolution the 2017 Firearms Industry Choice Award for Rifle of the Year. Previously reviewed here at TFB, the Revolution is a relatively lightweight .308 AR-platform rifle that this author found to be accurate, pleasant to shoot, easy to clean, and 100% reliable throughout the review.
Some Brazilian criminals' show-off videos
In a recent post (http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/11/02/brazilian-criminals-show-off-weaponry-social-media/), we presented some photos of Brazilian criminals showing off different types of weapons used in their, eh, trade. It’s not unusual for those guys to also use the social media to exhibit video scenes of the same type, while some other footage pieces have been recovered from captured/killed outlaws. Most of the performers shown here are no longer in business… for different reasons. The selection that follows may be of interest:
USMC Set to Field H&K M27 as Combat Rifle as Part of Infantry Kit Overhaul
The Commandant of the United States Marine Corps (CMC) has stated his approval for an overhaul of the front-line infantry Marine’s gear – including the fielding of the Heckler & Koch M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle as a standard issue rifle, to replace the M4 Carbine. The move comes after considerable debate as to what the USMC’s next infantry weapon configuration should look like. From Military.com’s KitUp!:
