U.S. Secret Service Officer Accidentally Shot Himself

A U.S. Secret Service (USSS) Uniformed Division officer wounded himself with a negligent discharge on Saturday, September 21st. Early media reports initially said a Secret Service special agent had been involved, however, the matter was clarified by a spokesperson for the Uniformed Division.

Plainclothes special agents, like those often seen surrounding the president, protect top U.S. officials as well as visiting diplomats and others. Their responsibilities also include their more historic role of investigating financial crimes and counterfeiting. Secret Service uniformed officers wear obvious law enforcement gear and attire. Their job description typically involves the protection of facilities and venues being secured for those officials.

The officer in question was handling his weapon just before 8 pm in Washington D.C. near 32nd and Fessenden streets in the northwest section when the incident occurred. The current issue sidearm for the Uniformed Division is the Glock 19 in 9mm. While injuries were not life-threatening, he was taken to a local area hospital for treatment and evaluation and is expected to make a full recovery.

“There are no reported injuries to any other individuals and the officer was evaluated at an area hospital… The Secret Service’s Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the facts and circumstances of this incident,” said Lt. Paul Mayhair, a public information officer with the USSS Uniformed Division.

This incident comes during intense criticism of the agency in the wake of two assassination attempts in as many months on former President and current Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump. Rather than adding to that criticism, I’ll take this opportunity to instead remind everyone of the 5 Basic Rules of Firearm Safety, since it is obvious that accidents can occur no matter who you are or your level of experience with firearms. Remember:

  • Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
  • Always point your gun in a safe direction.
  • Never point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to shoot.
  • Be sure of your target and what's beyond.

To all our readers here at TFB, be aware and stay safe.

The SS are neither "Secret" nor a "Service". The Praetorian Guard then as now has never not been political, and like so many other LEO agencies, their weapon handling abilities are marginal.

They sure look and talk a good game though, don't they.

Why is this here? There's literally nothing of substance in this article, just random, slightly gun related news. Not even a mention of it was a P320 or something. This is the kind of stuff I expect from TAG not "politics free" TFB.

Nothing political here. This can happen anywhere, any time, to anyone. Stay safe. I'm sorry you didn't like the content.
