The Rimfire Report: Walther WMP 22WMR Pistol Review

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various firearms, ammunition, and sports! Last week, we talked about the reliability or unreliability of rimfire cartridges. While there was a lot of disagreement over just how reliable .22LR was on its own, most of you agreed that more premium ammo tended to be more reliable including hotter offerings like .17HMR, .17HM2, and of course, .22WMR. Walther recently released the new WMP (Walther Magnum Pistol) chambered in .22WMR and today on The Rimfire Report we’ll be taking a closer look at it to assess how this newest addition to the rimfire market functions and feels.

The Rimfire Report: Rimfire Reliability – Is it Really That Bad?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! Last week we took a look at the practical application of .22WMR and whether or not it would make for a suitable stand-in as a self-defense cartridge. Although .22WMR is magnitudes more powerful than even the hottest of .22LR cartridges, many of you held the same sentiment towards it as you do .22LR – it’s just not powerful enough or reliable enough to feel comfortable carrying when you have other options available to you. The last part of that reasoning caught my attention as I’ve actually never had a failure to fire that I can remember when using .22WMR. So today I wanted to take a closer look at the reliability of various rimfire cartridges based on my experiences, and the experiences of others, to ascertain whether the infamous rimfire reliability gun lore is actually that bad.

The Rimfire Report: Is 22 Magnum A Viable Concealed Carry Cartridge?

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, sports, and ammunition. Last week we talked a bit about CCI Stingers for use as a concealed carry .22LR cartridge. Once again we saw that although the round can get pretty fast and expand pretty aggressively out of a rifle, it really doesn’t hold up when shot from a backup-sized pistol. That being said, if it’s all you’ve got or all you can manage to carry, it is most certainly better than nothing when it comes to a defensive shooting situation. 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire is the big brother of .22LR and many of you have expressed interest in its viability as a concealed carry cartridge. With the recent release of the Walther WMP – a full-size semi-auto optics-ready .22 WMR pistol – the question has come up in my mind once again to determine whether or not .22 Magnum might actually make for a decent lighter-recoil self-defense cartridge for concealed carry. So today we’ll be taking a closer look at the performance metrics of .22 Magnum to see how well it holds up compared to other lighter recoil options for concealed carry.

The Rimfire Report: The Ultra Hot CCI Stinger In Ballistic Gelatin

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm universe. Last week, we looked at the unique and exciting MK4 Carbine Upper Receiver Firearm, a joint venture between competitive shooter Wade Reed and MaddMacs Precision. A lot of you thought the design was quite inventive. In contrast, others kinda turned their noses up at it in favor of the already compact Ruger 10/22 Charger which does have the benefit of having a bit more modularity and magazine capacity but is undoubtedly much heavier and bulkier than the MK4 Carbine can be. Personally, I thought the MK4 Carbine was a neat idea and it would honestly be a great backpacking gun – especially if there was a way to get more than 10-rounds to a magazine in it. Loaded up with some hot ammo, the MK4 could be a great hunting or even a self-defense firearm in a pinch. Speaking of hot ammo, we’re back again this week doing another ballistic gel test, this time featuring CCI Stinger 36-grain Hollow Points. A lot of you had requested that we test out these hot little cartridges to see how well they’d perform out of a handful of firearms ranging from pocket pistols up to the 10/22 rifle. So today we’ll be taking a look at the data I collected for the CCI Stinger cartridge and see how it stacks up to our previous 22LR ballistic gel tests.

The Rimfire Report: Pondering the MK4 Carbine from MaddMacs Precision

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, ammunition, and sports! Last week we took a look at the much loved CCI Velocitor 40-grain 22LR cartridge to assess its efficacy as a self-defense cartridge when being fired out of a pistol. What we saw and what many of you could have guessed is that the hypervelocity 40-grain hollow points didn’t really perform all that well out of the shorter barrels, but once up to speed out of the longer barrel of my Ruger 10/22, they expanded aggressively and also penetrated to an adequate depth! Interesting stuff! Speaking of Ruger firearms, I recently came across this interesting upper for the MKIV pistol manufactured by MaddMacs Precision Tactical LLC – the MK4 Carbine. I’ve always dreamed of working out a way to turn my MKIV pistol into a lightweight carbine and while there might be some hokey homemade options out there, this is the first time I’ve seen one made by a reputable manufacturing company and it looks not only well made but opens up a lot of possibilities to turn your MKIV pistol into a more well rounded and lightweight backpack gun. Today we’ll be checking out the features of this upper and make a few comments on its design and how I think it could be used in various applications.

The Rimfire Report: Federal 22LR Punch Out Of Ruger 10/22 – More Effective?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world. Last week we did some testing with various pistols and Federal’s 22LR Punch personal defense ammunition. While the results demonstrated that Federal Punch performs quite well and achieves sufficient penetration, it did not expand. Beyond that, the ammunition did seem to live up to its velocity claims which were also something nice to see out of a product that is specifically marketed for self-defense. However, a couple of you had mentioned in the comments that you would like to have seen the tests repeated using clothing, and also using a 10/22 rifle to see if it made any difference. So for this week on The Rimfire Report, we’re going back to the range with another gel block and some new guns to see how Federal’s 22LR punch ammunition performs in those particular situations.

The Rimfire Report: Fletcher Rifle Works 11/22 OpenTop Receiver Review

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! I’ve got great news for rimfire enthusiasts: It’s finally here! The OpenTop 11/22 receiver. Those that have followed Sebastian for a couple of years will know that he’s poured his blood, sweat, and probably tears into this project and it has finally come to fruition. For those that don’t know, the OpenTop 11/22 receiver was a project started by Sebastian Unger back in 2017 in his uncle’s garage near Vienna, Austria. The project basically sought out to take the 10/22 design and modernize it to include an integrated Picatinny rail and best of all, allow for easier cleaning of the rifle without complete removal from the stock and the trigger pack.
