New SPARTANAT Book Studies Combat Lessons From Ukraine Conflict

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is entering the 10-year mark if you count its beginning as February 2014, or nearing the three-year mark, if you count February 2022. Either way, this has been the most active conflict in the Western world in the past decade, and that means military thinkers are busy analyzing the use and effects of new weapons, tactics and strategies. Now, the crew at SPARTANAT have a new book to share some of those lessons with you. It’s called Combat Experience – Military Lessons From The War In Ukraine.

Hard-learned lessons

The conflict in Ukraine has been filled with trench warfare, artillery duels and large-scale armor attacks. But along with these elements we’re familiar with, the rival militaries have also used small, cheap and dispensable drones for recon work and surgical strikes against vehicles, soldiers and aircraft. Spartanat says “This fusion of "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Blade Runner" technologies has created a unique battlefield environment and has been a defining feature of the conflict.” Their book explores the lessons learned by Europe’s top military thinkers, with first-hand accounts and analysis.

The resulting work shares newly developed thoughts on strategy and tactics, leadership and training, weapons and logistics, all forged by the Ukraine war. There are sections that deal with the use of drones, and defense against them, and the realities of dealing with international and paramilitary forces.

The authors

Christian Vath and Valerij Zaluschnyj co-wrote this book, with Lawrence Holswoth providing English-language translation. Vath has been writing about infantry topics since 2013, and founded the Light Infantry International training program in 2023 to establish new standards in training light infantry forces. Zaluschnyj was commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army from July 2021 to February 2024. Holsworth was a former infantry sergeant in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division; since his time in the military he has earned a degree in International Affairs, focusing with a focus on German Language and European Area Studies.
