Big Horn Armory has released a takedown version of their Model 89 lever action rifle. The takedown mechanism of this rifle was designed by none other than John Moses Browning himself. By the way, Model 89 lever guns are also basically Browning designs as they have Winchester Model 1886/1892 pattern actions. In fact, 89 in the model name of BHA’s lever gun is the arithmetic mean of 86 and 92, because size-wise the Big Horn Armory Model 89 is right between the Winchester Model 1886 and 1892. Let’s take a look at the specs and features of the Big Horn Armory Model 89 Take Down lever action rifle.

Big Horn Armory @ TFB:

Here is how the company describes the design of the takedown mechanism:

“In 1905 John Moses Browning received patent #781765 for the only purpose-built take down long gun he designed. It was the strongest take down design built up to that time.
Big Horn Armory wanted to build a take down gun. Utilizing JMB’s basic design, we used modern 17-4PH stainless steel for strength; salt bath nitriding for hardness, durability and high quality finish; combined with BHA’s craftsmanship to produce the strongest, most beautiful take down design, ever.
The row of splines running the full height of the receiver resist movement in all directions almost as well as if it were a single piece of steel. Multiple proof loads fired in prototypes caused no change in headspace or any other dimension.”

Big Horn Armory Model 89 Take Down is chambered in .500 S&W Magnum and has an 18” barrel. The furniture is made of American black walnut, is fitted with sling swivel studs and a recoil pad, and has a satin finish. The lever is enlarged for ease of operation with gloved hands. The standard sights are a rear aperture and a front post. The rifle can also be fitted with a fiber optic front sight, scout scope mount, and red dot sight mounts of various footprints. The price of the Big Horn Armory Model 89 Take Down lever action rifle is $3,999.

    ( O_O) it's beautiful, man

Dang, if I had spend-four-large-on-a-levergun kind of money I'd be on that like butter on toast, what a great concept.

The old Elmers Glue tag line, “stronger than the wood it is gluing”.
