Welcome back to another installment in our Friday Night Lights series. Last week I showcased some rather niche gear, thermal beacons. This week we will take a look at something that has caught the attention of some people – the SiOnyx OPSIN helmet-worn digital night vision device. A lot of people have been asking for an OPSIN review so let’s dive in.

SiOnyx has made a name for themselves with their Aurora action camera. It is sensitive in low light and has been called digital night vision. However the Aurora was never designed to be a helmet mounted system. It is camera first and foremost. Well now SiOnyx has a new digital night vision monocular called the OPSIN.

One of the country’s leading digital night vision device manufactures has landed a pretty big contract with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. SIONYX recently acquired a 5-year long contract to provide FBI agents with the pocket-sized Aurora PRO digital night vision camcorder to allow their agents to capture full-color daylight images in low light conditions. The SIONYX Aurora PRO operates using an extremely light-sensitive sensor in stark contrast to true night vision devices which use image intensifier tubes.

The SiOnyx Aurora is a digital night camera that is sensitive to low light. It has the added benefit of being able to see into the infrared spectrum of light. I wrote a review of the original Aurora almost two years ago. I found the Aurora to be a great accessory that compliments my night vision and have found that using it as a POV camera works very well. The problem is finding a way to mount it to your helmet. Kiloohmcom makes some really great Aurora camera bridges that are worth taking a look at.

The SiOnyx Aurora is a digital night vision camera. It is relatively inexpensive and has potential. It has a sensor that is sensitive to low light and has the ability to see infrared light. While the Aurora is a pretty straight forward action camera, it has greater potential lying dormant inside. Thanks to astrophotography enthusiast CNOCT (aka Carpe Nocturnum) who sacrificed his Aurora. His modified Aurora can now use a variety of lenses as well as work with a PAS-29 COTI to get thermal fusion.

At last SHOT Show 2020, SiOnyx unveiled their new Aurora Pro digital night vision camera. If you recall, I reviewed the original Aurora camera a year before that. Well, partially thanks to my mistake in further testing my Aurora, SiOnyx was gracious to replace my broken Aurora for the new Aurora Pro.

If you recall earlier this year I reviewed the SiOnyx Aurora night vision camera. The Aurora is a handheld digital camera that has a rather sensitive CCD sensor to low light. In the right lighting conditions, it is arguably better than night vision. The regular Aurora retails for $799. Well, on July 9 they launched their new Aurora Sport and it retails for only $399.

While the Aurora night vision camera was never intended to be helmet mounted I was able to cobble something together to see if it could be done.
