Background:

It has been said that perfect can be the enemy done, and for owners of Ruger American Centerfire rifles this may have felt like the case with Magpul’s newest Hunter stock. Personally, I have been waiting excitedly since May 2017 for the Hunter American Stock to be made available. Here is a link to the original TFB posting ( https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/05/09/magpuls-recent-product-commercials/ ) Originally Magpul had stated it would be ready in the Fall of 2017. That time came and went and the stocks were still no where to be found. When I checked Magpul website I saw the time-frame had been pushed back. As it turns out Ruger was making some changes to their American Rifles and Magpul wanted to make sure “what works for one works for all.” Well they have done it and the American Hunter Stocks are finally shipping.

The Platform:

I have been incredibly impressed with how accurate the Ruger American centerfire rifles are especially for their price. I have shot more than 10 rifles in various calibers and only 1 has shot over 1 MOA 5 shot groups, and that one had a barrel that had been cut down to 18″ by a local gunsmith. Four 6.5 Creedmoors have all yielded groups in the 1/2 to 3/4 MOA range with factory match ammo. In fact I was using a Ruger American the first time I shot beyond 1000 yards. I say all of this simply to paint a picture of my affection for these rifles. They are my favorite budget-priced factory rifle, and Magpul has just released the fix to their two weakest links, the ergonomics and rigidity of the factory stock and their factory magazines. The stock is really no worse than anybody else’s factory Tupperware but no better either. A friend and I ( Hi Jeremy C) have been equipping them with custom bent kydex held on with Chicago screws correct the cheek height. As for the magazines, they function fine but with only 4 rounds and a short internal length they are relegated to hunting duties rather than PRS style competition shooting. All of that is about to change.

Don't be surprised when you see these stocks and rifles in more places than just the woods.

Here is what Magpul has to say about it:

The Magpul Hunter American Stock – Ruger American™ Short Action is the latest entry in our Hunter series, and it’s designed to bring you premium performance in an affordable package. We started with an anodized aluminum bedding block and added reinforced polymer to give you the durability, features, reliability and comfort you’ve come to expect from all of our stocks. The Magpul Hunter American offers users a cost-effective replacement to the factory stock that features enhanced ergonomics and a fully adjustable length of pull and comb height. Spend $500 on a rifle. Throw away the garbage stock. Spend $350 on a replacement stock. Should have just gotten a Hawkeye. Superior rifle without going through all the fiddling.

'Hunter' stock weighs 3.3 lbs? Yikes. Maybe a good choice for stand hunters. And look, they added a detachable mag that sticks well out the bottom, yay.

Stock looks okay, but the name is silly.
